Starry Night Sky Photography at Strata Florida Abbey — with Alyn Wallace SOLD OUT

Time 6pm - 10pm
Location Strata Florida Abbey

Ever wanted to learn how to shoot a star-studded night sky? Then look no further…

Set against the picture-perfect backdrop of Strata Florida Abbey, join one of Wales’s most esteemed Astro photographers, Alyn Wallace (who boasts 32,000 Instagram followers!), for a magical evening of starry night sky photography. Plus, it’s a rare chance to explore one of Wales’s most prized heritage sites at night!

The exclusive, four-hour workshop will begin with an indoor theory session (1.5 hour), where attendees will gain valuable knowledge in the required planning, camera settings and techniques required to successfully capture the sheer wonder of Wales’s dark skies. Whether it’s tips on how to avoid light pollution (even with budget cameras), discussions about post processing techniques or queries about the best camera gear and lenses, Alyn will be on hand to offer a wealth of advice and answer any questions related to the astrophotography field.

With new learnings in tow and ready for practice, attendees will be guided around Strata Florida Abbey by night (2.5 hours) to discover a series of locations which promise a spectacular shot of the 12th century monument beneath the stars.

To take part in the event, attendees must bring along the following equipment:

·         Camera (DSLR / Mirrorless)

·         Wide angle lens (e.g. 18-55mm, 10-20mm, 14mm, 16-35mm)

·         Headtorch (it’s going to be dark!)

·         Tripod (available to borrow on a first-come-first serve basis – please request in advance of the event via email)

As much of this event will be spent outdoors and in complete darkness, event attendees must bring a head torch (to make sure you can get your camera ready and in position for those all-important snaps!) and are advised to dress appropriately for the weather e.g. warm clothes and suitable enclosed footwear.

FAQ:

I’m an absolute beginner, is this event suitable for me?

Yes! This workshop is suitable for complete beginners through to amateurs with some in experience in night photography who are looking to brush up their skills and take it up a level.

I’m really interested in this event but I don’t have a DSLR camera / I only have camera ‘X’ and lens ‘Y’ — is this ok?

Don’t be embarrassed about your camera or lens. It’s not about the gear, it’s the taking part that counts!  If you’re unsure or would like to check whether your equipment is suitable, please email cadw@equinox.wales.

Will the workshop still go ahead if the weather is bad?

If the forecast is cloudy or rain, the event will still go ahead as an astrophotography theory and light painting (practical) workshop — which can be delivered both indoors and outdoors. In the event of a storm, the event will be cancelled with 24 hours-notice and re-arranged for a later date.
